“Either there is a God, or there isn’t. Both possibilities are frightening. If there is a God, we better find out who He is and find out what He wants and do what He says. If there is no God, we’re in trouble – we’re hurtling through space around the Sun right now at 66,000 miles an hour and nobody’s in charge of it.” (Russian Astronomer)
The above-mentioned statement will make both sceptic and believer sit up and think. As for me, I have found the Bible to be a source of great comfort in the light of this quote. God being in control is very reassuring indeed. This famous verse has had a profound impact on my life. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 (NKJV) The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the greatest liberating message and the only eternally relevant news that’s ever been told! “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Luke 19:10 (NKJV)
Sin has indebted mankind to the point where we are bankrupt beyond human rescue. But God paid our sin debt in full. All we have to do is accept it. I found this quote by Mark Twain to be very humorous: “Adam was but human—this explains it all. He did not want the apple for the apple’s sake; he wanted it only because it was forbidden. The mistake was in not forbidding the serpent; then he would have eaten the serpent.” The painful reality is that we all have an inherent sin problem, but God has a profound solution. The Bible declares that “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (NKJV). No other price would suffice, “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all.” 1 Timothy 2:5-6 (NKJV). So high was the price paid for you and I, that legally there can be no other way to attain that which was purchased, namely our salvation.
If Jesus was merely one of many ways to God, He wouldn’t have been necessary. However, He did claim to be three things that make it impossible for us to remain neutral about Him; He claimed to be The Way, The Truth and The Life. All three claims are exclusive. That’s why C.S. Lewis stated, “Christ either deceived mankind by conscious fraud, or He was Himself deluded and self-deceived, or He was Divine. There is no getting out of this trilemma. It is inexorable.”
The blessing: Because He is The Way, I can confidently follow Him, because He is The Truth, I can wholeheartedly believe and put my faith in Him, and because He is The Life, I am at peace, for I have everlasting life in Him.
I conclude with these lyrics written by John Newton, “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound; that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, was blind, but now I see.”
Evangelist Hein Strauss
